Although many know the rule of thumb is to visit the dentist around once or twice a year for regular check-ups and cleanings, many patients are unsure how often they need to visit an orthodontist. That is because numerous factors play a role in answering this.

Age of Patient

A person’s bite, teeth, and upper and lower jaws can shift as they age. This is especially true of children and teenagers. Their teeth and jaws change at an accelerated rate compared to adults.

Childhood is also the point in a patient’s life where orthodontic treatment can be the most impactful, thanks to the malleability of their skeletal structure. Although there is no set age for when children should receive an orthodontic consultation, a general rule of thumb is around the time their permanent teeth start to come in.

History of Orthodontic Care

The history of your orthodontic care can determine the current state of your teeth and jaw alignment. Patients who have already completed a full set of orthodontist treatments still need to return at regular intervals.

These intervals become longer over time, such as first at five weeks after treatment, then three months, then eventually one year to ensure. For first-time patients, only a consultation with an orthodontist can determine the current state of your concerns.

Patients in Treatment

Whether it be with traditional braces or newer methods such as Invisalign trays, patients must visit the orthodontist at the regular intervals as set out in the treatment phase – typically around four to six weeks.

Not only is this necessary for things such as tightening of the archwire to ensure a successful outcome, but it also allows your orthodontist to regularly observe progress.

Listen to your Orthodontist

As is evident by this point, there is no definitive answer as to how often you should visit an orthodontist. Numerous factors will influence this, such as your age, whether you are currently or have previously undergone orthodontist treatment, and your current concerns with your teeth and jaw alignment.

The best option will always be to book a consultation and receive answers from a board-certified orthodontist.
